Healing Trauma with EMDR Intensive Therapy

“Changing the memories that form the way we see ourselves also changes the way we view others, therefore, our relationships, job performance, what we are willing to do or are able to resist, all move in a positive direction. The past affects the present even without our being aware of it.”

-Francine Shapiro

Trauma is not just about the challenging or distressing events one experiences; it's more about the lasting internal response or disruption that these events trigger within a person's emotional, cognitive, and psychological framework. In essence, it highlights how trauma resides in the deep-seated emotional and psychological effects these experiences evoke, shaping how one perceives, feels, and responds to the world thereafter, such as:

  • Birth Trauma

  • Traumatic loss and/or grief

  • Sexual Assault

  • Religious Trauma

  • Work related events for first responders, therapists, doctors, lawyers, etc.

  • Overwhelmedness, irritability, and anxiety related to parenthood

  • Parenting-related triggers from your past

  • Painful or distressing childhood experiences

  • Relational trauma

  • Car accidents

  • Survivors of sexual abuse/sexual assault

  • Medical Trauma or chronic illness

  • Phobias

What is EMDR Intensive Therapy?

Trauma manifests uniquely across individuals, reflecting a spectrum of experiences and reactions that defy a one-size-fits-all understanding. Traditional counseling methods, while effective for many, can sometimes lead to a perceived stalling or loss of progress from session to session.

This is where Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) therapy shines. Recognized as an evidence-based approach to trauma treatment, EMDR offers a promising pathway for those seeking to alleviate the intense and often debilitating responses associated with traumatic experiences. By harnessing the brain's innate healing processes, EMDR therapy aims to significantly lessen or even eliminate the distressing symptoms of trauma, offering a beacon of hope for enduring recovery.

EMDR Intensive Therapy is a powerful way to accelerate your healing and the symptom relief that may be normally experienced over time in a series of standard 50-minute EMDR sessions. Concentrated and in-depth EMDR Intensive Therapy offers you the opportunity to plan for a longer allotted time such as a 3-hour session or a 6-hour session during a week or weekend for more in-depth work without gaps between sessions. By having a dedicated chunk of time devoted to treatment at one time, you increase the percentage of session time spent addressing the memories and symptoms that brought you to treatment, thus ending your session at a much lower level of distress and with potentially fewer side effects following your treatment session.

While everyone is unique in their experience, most EMDR Intensive Therapy clients report that in this condensed time frame, they can achieve what might typically take months of weekly therapy over time.

Who Can Benefit from EMDR Intensives?

  • Individuals seeking rapid progress in their healing journey.

  • Those with demanding schedules seeking an alternative to weekly therapy sessions.

  • Anyone feeling stuck in their current therapy process or looking to deepen their therapeutic work.

  • Individuals preparing for significant life events or transitions, seeking mental and emotional readiness.

What should I expect from EMDR Intensive Therapy?

Before

Prior to your scheduled EMDR intensive, we will meet for a pre-intensive interview to determine your goal for our time together. We will look at and discuss what your life looks like currently (support system, current coping skills, stressors, places you want relief, healing, and/or growth/big steps forward.)

During

During the intensive, we will make the painful stuff in your life hurt less and help the good things in your life feel even better. We do this with EMDR reprocessing as well as various resourcing and grounding activities like visualization, guided meditation, breath work, tapping into all five senses, artwork, and whatever else feels good and grounding for you! I can teach you ways to regulate your nervous system and we will have opportunities to practice these skills as needed. We will incorporate the bilateral stimulation from EMDR to strengthen any of these resources for you.  Depending on where you are on your healing journey and what you are wanting to work on, we can work on earlier memories and times in your life or focus more on the future. We can tailor this process to make it personalized and customized to fit your unique needs.

After

A post-Intensive session will reflect on your progress, with ongoing recommendations tailored to your journey.

If you're looking for a transformative therapeutic experience that can provide expeditious symptom relief and foster significant growth, consider the EMDR Intensive pathway. Contact us to schedule your free consultation and begin your journey toward healing and transformation.

Note: In complex cases, especially when multiple traumatic events or compounding trauma is present, additional intensive work may be recommended .
